If intake is too low

Phosphorus deficiency is uncommon, but when it happens it can affect bones, muscles, and general energy. Deficiency is more likely with severe malnutrition, certain medications, or major medical problems.

  • Loss of appetite, irritability, or confusion in more severe deficiency.

Too much phosphorus, especially from additives or in the setting of kidney disease, can upset calcium balance and strain bone and kidney health.

  • Very high intake from processed foods and supplements is not automatically harmless.

You have chronic kidney disease or use products with a lot of phosphate additives. The problem with phosphorus is often not deficiency, but imbalance.
